Ben Stillwater · Montana In The Spring - 3 Stars
www.benstillwater.com
Ben Stillwater‘s Montana In The Spring brings traditional country music back to the forefront. Ben shows a reverence for tradition in this recording of self-penned songs. While his influences, Lefty Frizzell, Sonny James, Merle Haggard, and Don Williams can be heard in the shadows of his music, his songs are still fresh and new. From the lonesome-sounding - Montana In The Spring to the up-tempo - Log Truck and the thought - provoking - Crossroad, Ben has stories to tell and wisdom to share. Not overproduced, this project has been dubbed - the sound of country rhythm, yet it relies heavily on the lyrics and Ben‘s straightforward and honest vocals. Ben Stillwater shows a lot of promise and proves that traditional country music is alive and well.

Jadi Norris · Make Hay - 4 Stars
www.jadinorris.com
The debut CD by Jadi Norris, Make Hay, is a diverse collection of styles. The opening cut - Borrowed Time, brings a little swing and from there the project rolls into a Hank, Jr. type song, Workin‘ Man‘s Saturday Night. At that point, it seemed the album may be disjointed, but after listening to the CD in its entirety, it simply high-lights Jadi‘s diversity. His single - Home Is Where The Heart Is is a rockin‘ tongue-in-cheek number - a groove where Jadi shines the brightest; although he transitions well to ballads like - Not In Love By Morning and the patriotic - Hail The American Soldier. Don‘t be surprised though, whether he‘s rockin‘ or slowin‘ the tempo down, there is plenty of country twang. Jadi‘s songwriting talents are also on display with eleven of the thirteen songs being self-penned. Overall, this is a strong first album, and holds a little something for everyone.

Robert Allen · Country Treasures - 3 Stars
www.myspace.com/robertallenmusic
Country Treasures is an appropriate title for this CD by Robert Allen. Chocked full of covers, listening is like taking a walk down memory lane. Even though these songs were originally cut by legendary artists such as George Strait (Ace In The Hole), Stonewall Jackson (Don‘t Be Angry), Jack Greene (Name It After Me (Statue Of A Fool), and Alan Jackson (Who‘s Cheatin‘ Who), Robert‘s strong vocals reflects his confidence in making each song his own - not just a copy. He has also included two tunes of his own, Some Things You Just Can‘t Drink Away, and When I‘m Gone which are well written and fit in fine with the classics. Don‘t feel like going out to a honky tonk - pull up a chair, grab a beer and put Country Treasures in the CD player for a good night of music.

December 2010

Jeremy Parsons · Doggondest Feelin’ - 3 Stars
PCG Nashville Records
www.jeremyparsonsmusic.com
Jeremy Parsons launches the album with the song, “The Night Hank Williams Died,” a musical tribute to the man that has obviously influenced his singing and songwriting style. The material, all written by Jeremy, is reminiscent of that ‘50s era when things were simpler and the cry of the steel guitar reigned supreme. The strongest song, “Hide Her Angel Wings,” shares the special view a son has of his mother. Special guest, Randy Kohrs adds his distinctive licks on dobro. Jeremy’s vocals surrounded by a dominant steel guitar makes this as solid country as you are going to find these days.

David Andersen · Countrypolitan - 3 Stars
Andersongs
www.davidandersenmusic.com
Guitarist, David Andersen, brings his impressive guitar style to CD. While performing over 3000 shows at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum, one can only imagine how many times he has played these classics; but he has breathed new life into these well-worn songs with innovative arrangements. Joined by Country Music Hall of Famer, Harold Bradley, this is a smooth and easy-to-listen to instrumental project.

Coldwater Canyon Band · Just Gettin’ Started - 2 Stars
KountreeBoyz Entertainment
www.coldwatercanyonband.com
Country music group, Coldwater Canyon Band, offers up this 13-song collection of all original material except for the remake of the George Jones’ classic, “White Lightnin’” -- which fits well with their redneck, outlaw country style. Coldwater Canyon Band has a reputation for high-energy performances and while the elements are there, it was not captured on this production. A soldier’s anthem with a solid country feel, “Peace of Mind” stands out as the best song on the project while “Redneck Soldier” and “Country Girls” cross the line with a piercing rock edge. While the group is worth watching, this recording does not highlight their talents.

Matt Bailie · Matt Bailie - 5 Stars
MDB True Vibe Entertainment / EMC Nashville
www.mattbailiemusic.com
Matt Bailie’s CD opens with his debut single, “Man Behind These Eyes,” which he co-wrote with Donnie VanZant and Aaron Scherz. It is a heartfelt, well-written song, which Matt delivers with expertise. He also co-wrote five other songs on the CD. Legendary artists, Donnie VanZant and Johnny VanZant show up as Music Director while some of Nashville’s finest musicians back Matt. Although recorded at several studios with several producers, there is no inconsistency here. Other favorite tracks on the CD are “This’ll Be A Memory” and the haunting “Only God Knows Why.” This project is country to the core and reminiscent of an early Garth Brooks. I am looking forward to watching Matt Bailie’s career grow!

Eileen Carey · Movin On - 3 Stars
www.eileencarey.com
Although a successful actress with roles in Batman, Hoffa and Basic Instinct, Eileen Carey, still had music in her heart, so she started singing again and has since released several albums. Her latest CD, Movin On is a collection of mostly self-penned songs, which has country roots, but is infused with a pop and blues flavor giving it an Americana feel. Her writing lends itself well to the female market, especially with these fun anthems, “Out With The Girls” and “He’s No Mr. Right, He’s Mr. Right Now.” There is believability in her vocals and encouragement in her words. Eileen Carey is an artist dedicated to using her gift to bless others and is donating a portion of the proceeds from this album to children’s charities.

Natasha James · Tequila Time - 3 Stars
Highway One Records
www.natashajames.com
California artist, Natasha James offers up a new CD, Tequila Time. Aptly titled, the project includes some good drinkin’ songs like “Tequila Time,” “Boy Do We Drink,” and “Straight To Hell.” Overall it is a honky-tonk sound mixed with a little blues, rock and some bluegrass making for a unique sound although it feels more California than Nashville. Writing twelve of the fifteen cuts, Natasha delivers her songs with a smoky, barroom vocal. Although a somewhat basic CD, Natasha has fun with the songs like “Stuck In Atlanta,” which in turn makes the listener’s toes start tappin’.

February 2011

JL Hickerson · Just Lucky - 4 Stars
www.jlhickerson.com
JL Hickerson’s debut CD, Just Lucky - simply stated is pure honky-tonk fun! The album gets off to a runnin’ start with the fast movin’ song, “Hardcore Country Girl” which fits together well with the other material on the project including the “cry-in-your-beer” style ballad, “Whiskey Did You Miss Me” and the honky-tonker’s party anthem, “Damnit Boys.” Even closing out the collection with “Jesus Is The Answer” seemed appropriate. This six-song CD covers everything from drinkin’ and lovin’ to partyin’ and repentance - all in less than thirty minutes. A great listen for the hardcore country audience.

AJ Janson · Bars, Scars And Old Guitars - 4 Stars
www.myspace.com/ajjansenmusic
This girl has some rock-n-roll in her veins, but she mixes that well with the country in her soul. Bars, Scars and Old Guitars is an edgy project, with the title cut leading the way. “South Of Utah” and “All Over This Town” have more of a country feel while “Smoke It” is a rockin’ bluesy number that will catch your attention. AJ also handles the ballad “I’ll Let You” well. Make no mistake this six-song CD is a contemporary project as AJ Janson blurs the lines between country and rock-n-roll.

Jeff Olson · Jeff Olson 2010 - 3 Stars
www.countryartistjeffolson.com
Jeff Olson must have some traditional country roots in his past because this three-song CD, Jeff Olson 2010, puts tradition on display. The material deals with a couple customary topics in country music - love and trains add to that a twangy guitar, fiddle and harmonica and you are on the road to a familiar country sound illustrated best on this project by the up-tempo number, “Rhythm Of The Rail.” While not as polished as some, there is honesty in Jeff’s delivery and songwriting one of the main components in country music.

March 2011

Charley Pride · Choices - 4 Stars
Music City Records
www.charleypride.com
Charley Pride’s voice has been a staple in country music for over thirty years, so it is no surprise that his new CD, Choices, is a satisfying and valid piece of work. Although some song selections are a little different than might be expected, there is still plenty of classic Charley to choose from with songs like “The Bottom Line” and “You Touched My Life.” His signature vocal stands tall in this straightforward country production, particularly on “Except For You.” The legend continues.

Peter Rudy · Mud Shack - 3 Stars
Big Chief Records
www.peterrudymudshack.com
Peter Rudy offers up a CD full of self-penned bluesy songs. While his vocals are raw, they are authentic and ear-catching. The earthiness texture although almost melancholy, brings a smile to the listener with songs like “Honus Wagner’s Bat” and “Dumdedum.” There is nothing typical or formula here just Peter’s interpretation of the songs written by his own hand. Call it blues…call it rock…or simply call it just Peter Rudy.

Becky Hobbs · Nanyehi - 3 Stars
Beloved Woman Of The Cherokee
www.beckyhobbs.com
These seventeen songs are from a new musical by singer/songwriter, Becky Hobbs and co-playwright, Nick Sweet. Nanyehi is based on the life of Becky’s 5th-great grandmother, Nancy Ward, who was first honored as a Cherokee warrior, then as a peacemaker in the 1700’s. Becky captures a hauntingly, spiritual sound throughout the CD and her reverence for the Cherokee history and people is evident. While this is not typical Becky Hobbs, she has done a nice job bringing the past into the present.

April 2011

Bobby G. Cargill · Ordinary Man - 4 Stars
www.bobbycargill.com
Bobby G. Cargill gets the album rolling with the title cut, “Ordinary Man.” The first few notes feature a sweet country fiddle, which sets the tone for the entire project. All the songs, written by Bobby, build a solid foundation for this traditional country project. Obviously influenced by his Texas roots, his smooth, easy vocal arrangements match the movement of the steel guitar and fiddle very well. Overall, the CD has an authentic sound and well worth a listen.

Ron Tanski · Dragged You Down - 4 Stars

This album was a little surprising, never expecting Ron Tanski’s vocals to turn down a musical path reminiscent of the legendary Louis Armstrong. His rich, blues vocals along with his unique piano style bring each of the twelve self-penned songs to life. Although a sparse production with all but three songs being piano/vocal, his voice captivates and dominates and puts a new spin on an old style with a little bit of jazz, some boogie woogie and a whole lot of blues. Nice.

Lathan Moore · Love In Your Life - 3 Stars
Blue Steel Records
www.lathanmoore.com
Lathan Moore mined coal to get enough money to come to Nashville - but there are no chunks of coal in this collection - it is chalked full of gems. A nice country “twang” sound makes this a pleasurable listen. Whether singing the ballad “Cornfield Cadillac” or the up-tempo, “I’d Rather Be Lucky Than Good,” Lathan delivers a believable and honest vocal that resonates well with traditional country music. He has made an impression with this - his debut CD - looking forward to seeing what comes next in his career.

May 2011

Howard Lips · Barrel Racer - 3 Stars
Adonda Records
www.HTIMusic.com
Singer/songwriter, Howard Lips, is not the “new kid on the block” in Nashville or the entertainment world for that matter. One of the most significant milestones of his career thus far is having three songs recorded by the illustrious group, The Platters - totaling 18 million in sales. Although that success lies firmly in the pop/rock market, this collection is straight-ahead solid country with a ‘70s feel. It is a typical songwriter CD with unpretentious vocals, yet it aptly represents the songwriter’s interpretation of his own creations. Howard writes about a variety of topics from “Barrel Racer” to the “Newman Lumber Company,” throughout which the music flows with ease.

LeGarde Twins · Brand New - 4 Stars
LeGarde Records
www.legardetwins.com
There is nothing as sweet and pure as sibling harmony and in The LeGarde Twins’ Brand New CD, those tight family harmonies are at the forefront. Born in Australia, they began performing together in the ‘50s. Being brothers with a long musical history adds a level of confidence to this project. While this is a traditional country project, their influences in cowboy music and Australian music are present throughout. Some of the material here is reminiscent of the late Billy Walker, particularly “I’m Looking For You.” A personal favorite is the western swing number entitled, “Swing Of Things In Texas.” All in all, a nice project.

Neil Young · A Treasure - 5 Stars
Reprise Records
www.neilyoung.com
Although Neil Young is a legendary entertainer, I was a little skeptical of how country this album would really be…but let me tell you, Neil knows how to “rock it” country style, particularly on “Are You Ready For The Country” and “Grey Riders.” This project is a compilation of live recordings from Neil Young’s tour with the International Harvesters band in 1984-1985. Live CDs generally have a different energy with a raw edge and this is no exception. Although recorded at various locations from Nashville and Austin to Berkeley and New York City, there is consistency throughout the album. This material is as relevant and stylish now as it was then. With five previously unreleased songs, this album is A Treasure!

June 2011

Richie McDonald · Slow Down - 5 Stars
Loremoma Music
www.richiemcdonald.com
As the lead singer for the group Lonestar, Richie McDonald’s vocals became a staple to country music fans. Now with the release of his solo CD, Slow Down, Richie’s vocals are as solid as ever with his signature heart-wrenching delivery. Known as an extraordinary ballad singer, he took this opportunity to record an album of ballads. Richie co-wrote all twelve songs on the project, which is no surprise with his past songwriting credits. The CD is full of positive, family and inspirational messages from “Hey God” to “Footprints On The Moon.” Overall a satisfying package.

Shar · Shar’s Country Classics - 4 Stars
Ramuk Records
www.sharclassics.com
Putting “classic” in the title of this CD is very appropriate. Shar chose to record some of the greatest songs in country music history like “Heartaches By The Number”, “Just Someone I Used To Know,” and “Heart Over Mind.” The arrangements are very traditional country with plenty of fiddle and steel guitar and reminiscent of the days when Jean Shepard and Kitty Wells were topping the charts. It’s nice to see these songs revamped in such a traditional way.

David Lynch · I Can See Sound - 4 Stars
David Lynch Music
www.davidlynchmusic.com
David Lynch has his own style, which he describes as “California Bluegrusion.” A unique cross of blues and folk, David delivers eleven of his self-penned songs with a laid-back vocal ease in this project, I Can See Sound. His material speaks of everyday things that most can relate to, yet his songs are anything but ordinary from “Feel The Rush” to “April Fool’s Blues.” This project is a nice diversion from normal.

July 2011

Billy Henson - There Is A Time - 6 Stars
Vine Street Records
Billy Henson’s new CD, There Is A Time kicks off with the title track and immediately gets toes to tappin’. The “Fiddles of Tennessee” add a delightful flair to his solid country vocals. Billy wrote six of the ten songs and all seem hauntingly familiar. His past success with cuts by Ernest Tubb and other country music pioneers plus his reverence for a traditional style are evident here. Songs like “In The Whispering Pine” and “If Loneliness Can Kill Me” make this an inviting project for those who want to take a new walk down memory lane.

Casey Dilworth - I Remember You - 5 Stars
www.caseydilworth.com
Pineview Studio Group
Casey Dilworth is helping keep traditional country music alive with plenty of steel guitar, fiddle and mandolin filling up the tracks on his album, I Remember You. Ballads such as “Before I Get To Heaven” and “Old River” seem to highlight Casey’s vocals best. There is a variety of material from fun songs like “Wicked Little Weasel” to songs with a more serious note such as “The Dash”; but no matter the song, Casey’s traditional country style is obvious.

East Coast Turnaround - Season In Hell - 5 Stars
www.eastcoastturnaround.com

The Season In Hell CD cover and title leads to the assumption that this is an album full of rockin’ outlaw music; however, while there are some “outlaw” moments like in ”Love, Life & Murder,” it’s not so much outlaw as it is Americana. While the group obviously works well together with the lead vocals familiarly wrapped with the rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass and drums, they play it too safe. East Coast Turnaround is a talented group that needs to add just a little more rowdiness to the grooves.

August 2011

David Adam Byrnes - Premium Country - 7 Stars
www.davidadambyrnes.com

The first line of David Adam Byrnes Thank You's in the liner notes says it all, “First, I have to thank God for both the gift of, and a love for, country music.” Not only does he have the vocal talent, but also you can hear his enthusiasm and the reverence he has for country music in each and every song. Traditional to the core, he transitions easily between ballads like “When I'm Done Missing You” and the funky country sound of “Down Homegrown.” The material is well written and the songs are well produced with David's vocals taking the spotlight. Nice!

Burns & Poe - Burns & Poe - 7 Stars
www.burnsandpoe.com

This duo, comprised of Keith Burns and Michelle Poe, offers up their first collaboration, Burns & Poe. Each is already well known in country music circles, Burns as a founding member of Trick Pony and Poe as a solo artist on Dreamworks. This 2-CD set includes lead performances by each as well as several duets. Keith co-wrote twelve of the thirteen songs, while Michelle co-penned five. Their sound is country and their voices blend well in this strong showing, particularly on songs like "Second Chance.” The CD ends with a live acoustic medley highlighting not only their vocals but also their chemistry. Burns & Poe are on their way to making country music history.

Mark Wills - Looking For America - 5 Stars
www.markwills.com

As noted by the first song on this project, Mark Wills is “Rockin' The Country.” From there, he rolls into the title cut, “Looking For America,” which is an anthem for many in the United States these days. The material is top-notch and Mark's vocals are on target, particularly on the “Phantom Of The Opry,” where his voice is surrounded by the haunting sound of the fiddle. Mark's mix of a little tradition with a contemporary edge is a winning combination.

Ronnie Milsap - Country Again - 5 Stars
www.ronniemilsap.com

Country Again includes twelve much-anticipated songs from the legendary Ronnie Milsap. True to form, Ronnie's vocals are impeccable and his delivery emotional. An album of primarily ballads, songs like “Trapped In An Old Country Song” and “Even Fools Get Lucky” toes the traditional country line while others feel a little more contemporary. On the up-tempo side, “If You Don't Want Me To (The Freeze) has a familiar Milsap sound. It is great to have new album from this superstar.

Brandon James - Down In The Sand - 4 Stars
www.brandonjamesmusic.com

This EP by Brandon James entitled Down In The Sand is definitely West Coast country. There is a laid-back contemporary feel running throughout the project. Multi-talented, Brandon wrote or co-wrote all four songs as well as co-producing the project. It is a pleasant change from the norm and a smooth, easy listen, especially “Beautiful Eyes.” As Brandon develops his own style, there should be even bigger and better things on his horizon.

September 2011

Hank Williams - The Legend Begins - Time Life - 7 Stars

Hank Williams is a legend. Although he died in 1953, each new generation has discovered his music, through either his original recordings or the countless cuts by other artists in a variety of genres. This three CD set offers a rare glimpse of Hank with recordings from around age fifteen to the later recordings of “The Health And Happiness Show.” The “snap, crackle and pop” sound of vinyl, has not been removed which only accentuates the history of the material and transports the listener back in time. It is easy to see why the legend of Hank Williams continues to grow.

Drake Jensen - On My Way To Finding You - 6 Stars
www.drakejensen.ca

Canadian artist, Drake Jensen, paves his way to Nashville with his first release entitled On My Way To Finding You, produced by notable songwriter/producer, Kim Copeland. Drake lends his songwriting talents to three of the eleven songs. His vocals are genuine with a strong country sound, and fit seamlessly into the production. The highlight of the project is “The Son I’ll Never Have,” to which he offers up a heartfelt delivery. There is not a lot of fluff here, just a nice solid country project.

Eric Church - Chief - 5 Stars
www.ericchurch.com

Eric Church continues to push the country music “envelope” with the release of his new CD enti-tled Chief in which he is unleashed and raw. The songs are edgy and rough, yet some are poign-ant like “Homeboy.” Others offer up a rowdy kind of fun like “Country Music Jesus” and “I’m Getting Stoned.” Co-writing all but one song, Eric displays his songwriting skills in addition to his musicianship and vocal prowess. Eric Church is definitely a rebel with a clue!

Cerrito - Y Las Chicas de Country - 5 Stars
cerritomusic.squarespace.com

Cerrito assembled some distinguished female duet partners for his album, Y Las Chicas de Coun-try. Combining Cerrito’s international-style vocals with these country ladies (Lane Brody, Janie Fricke, Liza Martin, Jett Williams, Moore & Moore, Lynn Anderson, Kathie Baillie, Elizabeth Cook and Sally Ann) produced an entertaining and satisfying project. While the production has Cerrito’s signature “Spanish” flare, it also has a traditional country sound that is particularly pleasing on songs like “Stranger,” “Mansion On The Hill” and “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You).” Country music mixed with a little jalapeno flavor!

Mike Bryant - If I Could Write A Song - 4 Stars
www.myspace.com/countryfaith

Mike Bryant brings a straightforward country approach to his latest CD, If I Could Write A Song. Writing all the material based on his own emotions from love and happiness to pain and regret makes this a very personal project. The traditional country arrangements are highlighted by the steel guitar, fiddle and mandolin. He aptly ends the project with a song honoring our soldiers, entitled “They Fight For The Right,” an emotion that is truly American.

October 2011

38 Special - Live From Texas - 6 Stars
www.38special.com

The Southern Rock group, 38 Special is legendary in the music world. Band members Donnie Van Zant, Don Barnes, Danny Chauncey, Larry Junstrom, Bobby Capps and Gary Moffatt combine talents to make their signature sound. This new CD, Live From Texas, captures perform-ances in various Texas cities, but what is really captured is the essence of the group - their intense energy and hard drivin’ sound. A live anthology of sorts, 38 Special performs some of their greatest hits like “Rockin’ Into The Night,” “Back Where You Belong,”

Joey + Rory - A Farmhouse Christmas - 6 Stars
www.joeyandrory.com

Husband/wife duo, Joey + Rory add their distinctive sound to a new Christmas project entitled A Farmhouse Christmas. Listening to their honest and sincere vocals brings the CD to life with fa-miliar songs like “If We Make It Through December” and “Blue Christmas.” They also introduce some new favorites like “What The Hell (It’s The Holidays)” and “The Diamond O.” Mixing their bluegrass/country sound with the holiday season ensures that everyone will be having a tra-ditional country Christmas. This CD is destined to become a holiday favorite.

Kevin Fowler - Chippin’ Away - 6 Stars
www.kevinfowler.com

Texas has long produced great country music artists and Kevin Fowler is no exception. His new CD, Chippin’ Away is a reflection of some strong Texas roots mixed with a reverence for pure honky-tonkin’, beer-drinkin’ country music. From “Hell Yeah I Like Beer” to “Girl In A Truck,” it shows that Kevin is enjoying his work with a vocal delivery that is solid, fun and energizing, but don’t think he has just one groove, his delivery of “Daddies And Daughters” is touching and heartwarming. Hell yeah Kevin Fowler is country!

Montgomery Gentry - Rebels On The Run - 6 Stars
www.montgomerygentry.com

Montgomery Gentry is a familiar name to country fans. Since their arrival on the country music scene, this duo comprised of Eddie Montgomery and Troy Gentry have been known for their hard-kickin’, edgy brand of music. Their first CD in a while, Rebels On The Run catapults them back into the mainstream spotlight with their trademark blend of Southern Rock and Country capturing the heart of the working man with songs like “Damn Right I Am” and “Work Hard, Play Harder.” Take note - these Kentucky rebels are back and sounding better than ever!

Nick Verzosa - She Only Loves Me - 5 Stars
www.nickverzosa.com

Texas entertainer, Nick Verzosa’s new CD, She Only Loves Me highlights vocals that are genuine and earthy. His country edge mixed with a little rockabilly and a touch of the blues makes for some first-rate “Red Dirt” music. The album runs the gamut from up-tempo fun with “Change Your Mind” and “7th Year Senior” to the heartfelt and soulful ballad “I Wouldn’t Answer.” This project should catapult Nick Verzosa even further up the Texas charts.

November 2011

Von Grey - Make Some Noise - 6 Stars
www.vongrey.com

The title of this CD, Make Some Noise is a little misleading because there is no “noise” here. The four sisters, ranging in age from 11 to 16, blend their harmonies around songs they have written and polish them with vocals that are smooth and pleasing to the ear. They have taken their classical training and mixed it with elements of bluegrass, country and pop to produce the von Grey style. Of the six songs on the CD, “Eyes On Your Honey” stands out. These girls have a bright future on the horizon.

Jed Dunkin - Dixie To Detroit City - 5 Stars
www.jeddunkin.com

Down-to-earth country music with familiar life lyrics fill Jed Dunkin's CD, Dixie To Detroit City. This production is all about a country boy sharing his thoughts and emotions from good times in “Dixie To Detroit City” and “Family BBQ” to more serious matters in “Daddy's Song” and “She Won't Let Go.” He also mixes in a little country gospel with “Come On Home” and “Gloryland.” While Jed's vocals are a little rough around the edges, it is a nice straight ahead, no frills country package.

December 2011

Madonna Nash - Madonna Nash - 6 Stars
www.madonnanash.com

Madonna Nash’s self-titled album may be contemporary, but her roots in country music run deep - back to her Great, Great Uncle Connie B. Gay, the founding President of the CMA. And much like her ancestor, she is expanding the limits of country music with a modern production that compliments her heartfelt yet sassy vocals. Her songwriting skills also shine on this project, particularly on “Dirty Little Secret” and “Whiskey Whispers.” Music with attitude.

Bradley West - Slow Train - 6 Stars
www.freedomtracks.com

Bradley West brings traditional country music home in his CD, Slow Train. There is a hint of Hank Williams, Sr. in his haunting vocals. Singing songs that touch the lives of the working man, this troubadour’s convincing performance mixed with strong lyrics resonates with values and tradition, particularly in “Grandma’s Wishes” and “Some Things Daddies Can’t Fix.” True country.

Clay Dustin - I’ll Take That Job - 5 Stars
www.claydustin.com

Clay Dustin’s album, I’ll Take That Job is for the workin’ man that likes to do a little honky tonkin’! He delivers songs that the common man can relate to - especially in these hard times - particularly fitting is the song, “I’ll Take That Job That Johnny Paycheck Shoved,” referencing the old Johnny Paycheck classic, “Take This Job And Shove It.” From “Too Much Tequila” to “Queen Of The Dairy King,” Clay offers up a solid honky tonkin’ project. Fun!
